Johnny "The Fox" Torrio

Torrio, nicknamed “The Fox,” made his name as a gang leader on the streets of Brooklyn. But he was different from most gangsters. He prided himself on his calm demeanor and claimed not to drink or carry a gun. Torrio left New York to work with Big Jim Colosimo and later recruited Capone to join him. Torrio was Capone’s mentor. He tried to teach his protégé to be calm and to try persuasion before resorting to violence. Capone didn’t always get it. In 1925, Torrio was shot and badly wounded. He recovered and left town. Capone took over.
