Frank "The Enforcer" Nitti

Originally named Francesco Raffele Nitto, Frank Nitti hailed from Angri, Italy—the same small Italian village as Al Capone’s parents. At one point, the Nittis also lived on the same Brooklyn block as the Capones. Coincidence or not, the connection probably gave Capone reason to trust Nitti. Nitti, nicknamed “The Enforcer,” became a key aide to the Big Fellow. After a brief term in prison for tax evasion, Nitti emerged as a powerful force in the underworld. While Capone served his time, Nitti ran the Chicago outfit. In 1943—fighting cancer and a racketeering indictment—he blew his own brains out.
